History

The idea for Eastside Catholic originated in 1974 and the new school opened its doors in 1980 in downtown Bellevue. For its first nine years, its campus was south of the Bellevue Square mall, at the former Bellevue Junior High School (old Bellevue High), now the Downtown Park.[10] The next campus was also rented from the Bellevue School District at the former Ringdall Junior High (1970-87) at 11650 SE 60th Street in Newport Hills. Eastside Catholic occupied that campus for nineteen years, from 1989 to June 2008. The new $42 million campus in the city of Sammamish opened in August 2008, which included an expansion to include grades 6-8.[1]

Activities and Sports

Championships

Eastside Catholic has won 3 state titles:

Football

Eastside Catholic participates in the Metro League. Eastside Catholic football is well known in the Puget Sound area for beating its rival O'Dea High School in a double overtime game in 2008, their first win against O'Dea in 14 years.[11] Bill Marsh who was the head football coach for many years at Eastside Catholic resigned in March 2009, and former Utah Blaze and Washington State University Quarterback Jason Gesser has assumed the Head Coach position.[12][13]

Speech and Debate

Eastside Catholic has a thriving forensics program, consistently winning awards in regional tournaments and national tournaments. In 2011 the team won the overall State Championship in Congressional Debate, qualified 2 kids in Congressional debate to the most prestigious debate tournament in the country, The Tournament of Champions held yearly by the University of Kentucky and had a student place 14th at the NFL national tournament in Congressional Debate. The program was started by the legendary Mike Burton and is currently coached by Jeff Gans. The team hosts two tournaments each year, a middle school speech tournament and a comprehensive high school tournament.

Volleyball

Eastside is known for its excellent varsity volleyball, which took second place in state in 2010, 2008, and 2003.[6]

Mock Trial

Eastside Catholic has had a strong Mock Trial program the past few years. In 2008, they took 3rd in the King County District Competition and finished 13th in the Washington State Competition.[14][15] In 2007, the team had its best season in school history. Eastside won the Snohomish County District Competition, placed fourth at the Washington State Competition, and was invited to compete at the American Mock Trial Invitational where they also placed fourth.[16][17] Robert Matthews started the program in 2003-04 and helped lead the team to its aforementioned success.[18] In 2010 Eastside placed 9th.[19]

Catch the Spirit Eastside Catholic,
The Crusaders won't be beat,
Our opponents learn the lesson
As we push them to defeat.

Give 'em all we've got and then some!
They'll remember Eastside's name.

As Crusaders win this game![5]
